Our Story
Rooted in tradition. Refined by science.
At the heart of Afari skincare is Bulbine frutescens.
Who we are
On a continent recognised for its rich heritage of traditional healers and its wealth of biodiversity, we embarked on a journey to find an indigenous botanical with regenerative skin benefits.
Thanks to an amazing team of female harvesters in Limpopo, South Africa and ground-breaking scientific research, the clinical benefits of Bulbine frutescens were discovered. This small shrub is indigenous to the dry valleys of Southern Africa and its sap has been used for generations as a remedy for skin injuries, due to its incredible soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
Recent scientific research has shown that the plant has a lot more to offer. The sap has clinically proven benefits in the stimulation of collagen synthesis, a fundamental process in maintaining your skin’s healthy, youthful-looking appearance.

Founder note
My interest in beauty and skincare runs through my veins. I’ve spent years working in every sector of the industry - from advertising and editorial, to retail - all in the pursuit of better understanding an industry that has the power to transform.
Being South African, surrounded by diverse flora and fauna and knowing that our country has a rich heritage of traditional healers, I wanted to find something special that could showcase our incredible biodiversity to the rest of the world.
When looking for a skincare range that could tackle my fine lines and growing pigmentation, I wanted a solution with as few products as possible - not just for my needs, but also to have a positive impact on others.
After many years, numerous ‘no’s’ and countless ways of being told ‘you’ll never find that ingredient’, Afari was born.
